The Woodbrook Medical Centre Patient Participation Group (PPG) was formed in January 2012 by a number of enthusiastic patients and staff with a common desire to try to improve the healthcare provided by the surgery.
The role of the PPG:
- Being a critical friend to the organisation
- To represent the whole practice population
- Advising the organisation on patient perspective and providing an insight into the responsiveness and quality of services
- Encouraging patients to take greater responsibility for their own and their family's health
- Carrying out research into the views of those who use the organisation
- Organising health promotion events and improving health literacy
- Regular communication with the patient population
Benefits to patients of being involved with the PPG:
- Feeling more involved and have a better understanding and knowledge of the practice and its staff
- Having a forum to make positive suggestions and voice concerns to help shape improvements to the services they receive
- Being more informed on healthcare provisions in the local area
- Witnessing change happen following feedback from group members and the wider patient population
Benefits to the practice of having a PPG:
- We are able to get a better understanding of patient experiences and thoughts on the services we provide
- Having a forum to test ideas and suggestions with patients
- Having the support of our patients in holding health education events and promoting local services helps us educate the wider practice population on how to best utilise all the services available to them.
- Improved communication between the practice and our patients
Meetings take place 3 to 4 times a year at the practice with representation from practice staff and they typically last an hour. PPG members can also arrange their own meetings outside of the practice without staff if they wish. Communication takes place via email.
